Some of you will be familiar with Reggie, who’s written the incredibly helpful music theory posts that you can find right here on

A while back I got an email from a reader who was wondering if the series of posts named Music Theory: The TL;DR Version could be compiled into a PDF for easier access and readability. I thought over it for a while and contacted Reggie, who thought it was a great idea.

The result? A comprehensive, fun, and easy-to-read guide to music theory.

The guide covers a range of important concepts in music theory, including:

  • Basic Melody: major and minor scales, intervals, modes, describing melodies.
  • Basic Harmony: triads and 7ths, inversions and variations, partial and extended chords, etc.
  • Intermediate Melody: counterpoint, diminished scales, harmonizing melodies.
  • Intermediate Harmony: altered and applied chords, mixture, modulation.
  • Rhythm: notation, syncopation, polyrhythms.

As well as digging into time signatures and the circle of fifths.

Great! How much does it cost?

Some of the content on EDMProd does cost money (such as the tension & energy eBook and courses), but Music Theory: The TL;DR Guide follows a “pay what you want” pricing model starting at $0.

This does mean it’s technically free. However, if you want to support Reggie for his hard work – then you can choose to pay a specific amount at checkout.

I don’t know a thing about theory. Is this too advanced?

In fact you’ll probably benefit from it the most. The guide starts off with the very basics of music theory and works up from there. If you’re a fast learner, you’ll appreciate it even more as it doesn’t contain loads of unnecessary information (hence the “TL;DR”).

Conversely, if you already know a bit about theory but would like to develop your knowledge and skills further – this guide is also great for you. The more advanced concepts located nearer the end of the guide can spark new ideas and open new pathways for you and your productions.
